Cosmetic Acupuncture in NYC

Mei Zen Protocol, Manhattan

What "Mei Zen" Actually Means

Mei Zen (美容针) is a specific 10-session cosmetic acupuncture protocol developed by Martha Lucas, PhD, L.Ac. — not a generic "facial acupuncture" service. Dr. Xaoling Shang, L.Ac. (MSTOM, NCCAOM-certified, 15+ years in practice) trained directly in the protocol and runs it as designed at our 57th Street clinic.

The Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture System is a defined protocol of facial and body point combinations, delivered twice weekly for five weeks. The face points create a controlled micro-response in the skin that the body repairs with new collagen; the body points address the internal patterns (digestion, sleep, hormones) that often show up first in the face.

This is different from one-off "facial acupuncture" sessions, which can feel nice but rarely produce the visible change of a full course. We do not begin a course unless we believe you are a good candidate, and we always say so on the first visit.

Mei Zen is self-pay. Insurance does not cover cosmetic acupuncture. We offer a 10-session package; ask about it on your first call.

Most patients booking cosmetic acupuncture in Manhattan come from one of a few places: someone in their late 30s who's noticing the first persistent forehead lines and wants to do something before going the Botox route; a 45-year-old who's done injectables for years and wants to add something that works on overall skin quality rather than specific muscles; a bride starting her wedding skin timeline 12 weeks out; a postpartum mom whose face has changed and who wants a non-toxic option while still breastfeeding. We treat each of these differently, but the underlying mechanism is the same — controlled micro-injury triggering collagen and elastin response.

What to Expect

  1. 1

    First visit — 75 minutes

Skin assessment, full TCM intake (sleep, digestion, cycle, stress), photos for your own before/after reference, and the first treatment. You leave with a clear written plan and pricing — no upsell pressure.

  2. 2

The course — 10 sessions over 5 weeks

Twice-weekly, 60-minute sessions. Each visit pairs facial needling with body points chosen for what your tongue and pulse showed that day. Most patients notice clearer skin around session 3, jawline and lift change around session 5–6.

  3. 3

    Maintenance — monthly

After the course, one session every 4–6 weeks holds the result. Many patients also keep coming for unrelated body acupuncture once they have started.

Why patients choose Delight for cosmetic acupuncture

Dr. Xaoling Shang, L.Ac. (MSTOM, NCCAOM-certified, 15+ years) trained directly in the Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture System with its developer's lineage — not from a weekend continuing-ed module. She runs the protocol as designed: facial points selected for your specific concerns, paired with body points drawn from your TCM diagnosis that day. This means a patient whose tongue shows blood deficiency receives different body points than one whose tongue shows liver qi stagnation, even when they're doing the same facial protocol. The face responds to internal patterns; treating one without the other is why so many cosmetic acupuncture experiences feel underwhelming.

We will not start a 10-session course for someone we don't think will benefit. If your main concern is deep static wrinkles you want erased, or volume loss in the cheeks you want restored, we'll say so at the first visit and refer you to colleagues who do filler and Botox well. Cosmetic acupuncture in NYC works for skin quality, fine lines, tone, and gradual lift — not for one-time volume change. Honest fit assessment before we take a deposit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mei Zen hurt? +

The needles are extremely fine — finer than the ones used for body points. Most patients feel a quick prick at insertion and nothing after. The body points (legs, arms, abdomen) feel similar to a standard acupuncture session.

Will I bruise? Can I go back to work? +

Pinpoint bruising happens occasionally — usually small and easily covered with makeup. Most patients head back to the office the same hour. Mild flushing for about an hour after is normal and often gives a fresh look.

How long do results last after the 10-session course? +

With monthly maintenance, most patients hold the result for 1–2 years. Without maintenance, the change softens gradually over 6–12 months — collagen turnover doesn't stop, and the body keeps aging on its usual timeline.

Can I do Mei Zen alongside Botox or fillers? +

Yes, but we suggest waiting 1–2 weeks between injectables and a needling session. Tell us your injectable schedule at the first visit and we'll work around it.

How is this actually different from Botox? +

Botox paralyzes specific muscles to prevent the lines those muscles cause. Cosmetic acupuncture works on the skin itself — triggering collagen and elastin remodeling, improving microcirculation, and addressing internal patterns that show on the face. They affect different things and many patients use both. Botox is faster and more targeted; cosmetic acupuncture is slower, broader, and improves overall skin quality. Expect changes over 8-12 weeks, not days.

When will I see results from cosmetic acupuncture? +

Most patients see clearer skin and reduced puffiness around session 3. Jawline definition and a sense of lift typically appear at session 5-6. The fuller result of the 10-session course is usually visible 2-3 weeks after the last session, once the collagen response has had time to consolidate. We take photos at session 1 and session 10 — most patients find side-by-side more telling than what they see in the mirror daily.

Can I wear makeup after a session? +

Yes, immediately if needed. We clean the face after needling. Most patients head straight to work or to dinner after a lunchtime session. If pinpoint redness shows, a tinted moisturizer or foundation covers it easily.

Is facial acupuncture safe during pregnancy? +

Facial points themselves are safe during pregnancy. However, some body points used in the standard Mei Zen protocol (SP6, LI4, certain abdominal points) are contraindicated in pregnancy. We modify the protocol for pregnant patients — fewer body points, none in restricted areas — and most prefer to wait until after delivery for the full course. If you're trying to conceive, let us know and we'll plan accordingly.

What if I have rosacea or melasma? +

Both can improve with cosmetic acupuncture, but they need a slower, gentler approach. For rosacea, we use fewer facial points and add cooling herbal masks. For melasma, the work is mostly internal (liver and blood patterns in TCM) and progress is slow — expect a longer initial course. We're upfront if we think your specific case will be hard to move.
