Acupuncture in Manhattan — Holistic Pain Relief & Wellness
Experience the healing power of Traditional Chinese Medicine at our Manhattan clinic. Our licensed acupuncturists provide safe, effective treatments for pain relief, stress reduction, and overall wellness.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a 2,500-year-old branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine that uses sterile, hair-thin needles placed at specific points along the body's meridians to coax tissue, nerves and qi back into balance. Most people walk into our Manhattan clinic expecting something more dramatic — bigger needles, longer waits, more pain. What they get instead is a quiet room, a heated table, and a treatment that often feels like a long exhale.
On the mechanism side, modern research has shown that needling activates A-delta sensory fibers, modulates the central pain gate, releases endogenous opioids, and shifts the autonomic nervous system out of fight-or-flight. The World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture as effective for 28+ conditions, and the 1997 NIH Consensus Statement specifically endorsed its use for postoperative pain, chemotherapy-induced nausea, and tension headache. None of that contradicts the older TCM framework — it just gives the same observations different names.
At Delight Acupuncture on West 57th Street — Midtown Manhattan, between 9th and 10th Avenues, a short walk from Columbus Circle, Lincoln Square and the Upper West Side — we see a broad mix: financial-district professionals with neck pain from long screen days, fertility patients coordinating with IVF clinics, dancers and athletes recovering between performances, expectant mothers managing nausea or breech presentation, and longtime locals who simply prefer acupuncture over another prescription. Dr. Xaoling Shang (DCAM, MSPT, MSTOM, L.Ac., 15+ years) and Dr. Yu Qi (MSTOM, L.Ac., 7+ years acupuncture, 10+ years bodywork) handle every visit themselves — there are no rotating juniors. Bilingual EN/中文.
What we do not do: promise cures, replace your cardiologist or oncologist, or push you onto a fixed package. We tell people upfront that some respond in one session and others need five before the pattern shifts; we re-evaluate every 4-6 visits and stop or pivot the plan when the data says so. Acupuncture is a real tool, not a magic one.
Conditions We Treat
Chronic back, neck & shoulder pain
Desk-postural pain, trapezius and erector spinae trigger points, disc-related radiating pain managed alongside your PT or orthopedist.
Migraines & tension headaches
Reducing attack frequency and intensity — often paired with magnesium and a sleep audit; we coordinate with your neurologist when needed.
Stress, anxiety & burnout
Shifting the autonomic system out of chronic sympathetic overdrive — most patients leave the table noticeably calmer.
Insomnia & disrupted sleep
Sleep-onset and 3 AM wake-up patterns alike — addressed via shen-calming points and TCM pattern work.
Digestive issues — IBS, bloating, reflux
Working on spleen-stomach patterns alongside any GI workup your gastroenterologist has already done.
Fertility support & IVF cycles
We coordinate with REI clinics throughout Manhattan — pre-transfer, post-transfer, luteal phase and early-pregnancy support.
Women's health — PMS, irregular cycle, perimenopause
Cycle regulation, hot flashes, mood and sleep changes — often paired with a custom herbal formula.
Sports injuries & athletic recovery
Strains, tendonitis, post-marathon recovery — we work alongside your PT, not against them.
Immune support & seasonal allergies
Reducing flare frequency and severity rather than masking symptoms — best started 4-6 weeks before allergy season.
Arthritis & joint pain
Knee OA, hand and wrist stiffness, post-injury joint pain — local needling plus electroacupuncture when appropriate.

What to Expect
- 1
Intake & TCM diagnosis (15 min)
We ask about what brought you in, sleep, digestion, stress, any prior diagnoses and current medications, then check tongue and pulse. We explain your TCM pattern in plain language and outline the plan before any needles go in.
- 2
Needling & rest (30 min)
Hair-thin sterile needles go in at chosen points — arms, legs, abdomen, sometimes the head. Most points feel like a quick tap; you should not be holding your breath. You then rest with the needles in, often dozing off.
- 3
Plan & follow-up
We remove the needles, briefly note how the session felt, and agree on follow-up. Acute issues usually need 3–6 visits over 2–4 weeks; chronic patterns often run weekly for 6–8 weeks before tapering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will it hurt? +
Most people feel a quick prick on insertion, then nothing — sometimes a dull, heavy ache near the point, which is the 'qi sensation' (de qi) we want. If anything is sharp, tell us and we adjust the angle or remove the needle. Patients who have only ever seen the larger hypodermic needles used for blood draws are usually surprised: acupuncture needles are roughly the diameter of a human hair, and dozens fit inside a single hypodermic.
How many sessions until I feel something? +
Acute issues — fresh strain, new headache pattern, mild cold — often shift inside 1-3 visits. Chronic patterns (months or years old) usually need 4-6 weekly sessions before the new baseline is clear. We review progress every 4 visits and either continue, taper, or change tools. If after 6 honest visits there is no movement, we say so and refer you elsewhere — acupuncture is not the right tool for every problem.
Are the needles sterile? Do you ever reuse them? +
Every needle is sterile, single-use, sealed in its own packaging until the moment we open it in front of you, and disposed of in a sharps container immediately after. Reusing needles is illegal under New York State licensing — not just bad practice. If you ever want to watch us open the package, just ask.
Does insurance cover acupuncture in NYC? +
Many NY plans now cover acupuncture for chronic pain, headache, and post-surgical recovery — Aetna, Cigna, United, and several BCBS plans most commonly. Coverage varies by employer policy and visit count. Call us with your insurance card info before your first visit and we'll verify benefits, no obligation.
Can I do acupuncture alongside my medication? +
Yes. Acupuncture has no drug interaction. We will never ask you to stop a prescribed medication — that's between you and your prescriber. If we add an herbal formula on top of acupuncture, we screen it against your medication list first (blood thinners, immunosuppressants and a few cardiac meds are the usual flags).
Can I get acupuncture while pregnant or trying to conceive? +
Yes — and many of our patients come specifically for fertility, IVF support, morning sickness, or breech presentation around week 34. We avoid certain points during pregnancy (Spleen 6, Large Intestine 4, the lower abdomen) as standard precaution. Tell us at booking if you're pregnant or in an IVF cycle.
How long is a session and what should I wear? +
First visit runs about 75 minutes (intake plus treatment); follow-ups are 45-60 minutes. Wear loose clothing that lets us roll up to the elbows and knees — most points are below those landmarks. We provide gowns and blankets either way; you stay covered except for the area being treated.
How do I get to your Midtown clinic? +
We're at 408 West 57th Street, Suite 1K — between 9th and 10th Avenues, two short blocks from Columbus Circle. Subway: A/B/C/D/1 at 59th-Columbus Circle, C/E at 50th Street. Easy walk from Lincoln Square, Hell's Kitchen, the Upper West Side, and most of Midtown West.
