Chinese Herbal Medicine — Natural Healing from Within
Discover the healing power of Chinese herbal medicine at our Manhattan clinic. Our experienced practitioners create personalized herbal formulas to address the root cause of your health concerns—not just the symptoms.
What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Chinese herbal medicine is the oldest continuously practiced pharmacopoeia in the world — over 2,000 years of documented clinical use, with the foundational text Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing compiled around 200 BCE. Today's practitioners draw from roughly 450 commonly-used herbs (out of several thousand catalogued) and combine them into formulas that typically contain 8 to 15 ingredients. A formula isn't a single-ingredient supplement; it's a recipe built to do several things at once — address the chief complaint, support the underlying pattern, balance any harsh ingredients, and guide the action to the right organ system.
At Delight Acupuncture in Midtown Manhattan we practice "Bian Zheng Lun Zhi" (辨证论治) — diagnosis and treatment based on pattern differentiation. Two patients with the same Western diagnosis can leave with completely different formulas: an insomnia patient with a hot, restless heart pattern gets Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan ingredients tilted one way, while an insomnia patient with spleen-qi and heart-blood deficiency gets Gui Pi Tang ingredients tilted another way. The diagnosis name on the Western chart is the same; the formula is not.
Herbs are available in several forms so you can pick what fits your life. Granules — freeze-dried extracts you stir into hot water in 30 seconds — are our default; most patients find this the easiest to stay on. Capsules suit travelers and patients who can't stand the taste. Raw decoction (boiled at home from sliced and dried herbs) is the strongest preparation; we save it for stubborn cases where the extra potency matters. Tinctures and topical washes are available where appropriate.
Sourcing matters more than most patients realize. We use US-based suppliers — Mayway, KPC, Treasure of the East — that test each batch for heavy metals, pesticides, sulfites and microbial contamination, and provide certificates of analysis on request. We do not dispense unsourced herbs, gray-market imports, or any animal products from threatened species. If a traditional formula calls for an ingredient we won't carry on those grounds (some classical bezoars, for example), we substitute with a clinically equivalent plant alternative and tell you.
Conditions We Treat
Digestive disorders — IBS, reflux, bloating
Spleen-stomach formulas where Western GI workup has ruled out structural disease. Bloating, irregular stools, post-meal fatigue.
Chronic fatigue & post-viral recovery
Qi and blood tonifying formulas for fatigue that lingers past the usual recovery window, including long COVID symptoms.
Insomnia & sleep issues
Sleep-onset, mid-night waking, dream-disturbed sleep — different formula families for each pattern.
Allergies, sinusitis & respiratory issues
Best started 4-6 weeks before peak allergy season; chronic post-nasal drip and recurrent sinus infections respond well.
Menstrual & hormonal patterns
PMS, dysmenorrhea, irregular cycles, fibroids support, fertility preparation, perimenopause and menopause.
Skin conditions — eczema, acne, rosacea
Internal herbal formulas for chronic skin patterns where topicals haven't held — typically 8-12 weeks to see meaningful change.
Immune support & frequent colds
Yu Ping Feng San family formulas for patients who catch every bug going around. Best taken preventively, not at the first sneeze.
Anxiety, stress & burnout patterns
Liver-qi stagnation and heart-spirit disturbance formulas — often paired with weekly acupuncture for the first month.

What to Expect
- 1
Pattern diagnosis & medication review (45-60 min)
Full health history, symptom map, sleep, digestion, cycle, stress patterns. Tongue and pulse exam. We ask you to bring your current medication and supplement list — every prescription, every over-the-counter, every supplement bottle on your shelf. We screen for known interactions before writing anything.
- 2
Custom formula (granules in 1 week, or same-day)
We write the formula from scratch based on your pattern — typically 8 to 15 ingredients, adjusted for any contraindications. Granules can usually be dispensed same-day from in-house stock or shipped to you within a week. Cost runs $25-$60 per week for most formulas. Raw decoction is available for cases that warrant it.
- 3
2-4 week follow-up & formula adjustment
First effects usually show in 7-14 days. We re-evaluate at 2-4 weeks and adjust — adding, subtracting, or shifting dosages. Chronic patterns may run 8-12 weeks before we stop the formula. We do not put patients on indefinite herbs; once the pattern stabilizes, we taper off.
Why choose Delight for Chinese herbs
A useful herbal formula is built around your pattern, not your diagnosis. Two patients with insomnia may walk out with very different formulas because one has a hot, restless pattern and the other a deficiency pattern. Dr. Shang and Dr. Yu both write formulas from scratch rather than handing out a stock blend.
We will tell you when herbs are not the right tool — for example when an issue is mechanical, when your symptom needs urgent Western workup, or when the cost-benefit doesn't favor adding another thing to take daily. Starting with acupuncture alone is often the right first step.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do the herbs taste like? Do I have to boil them? +
We default to granules — a freeze-dried extract you stir into hot water, takes 30 seconds. They taste bitter and earthy, not pleasant but tolerable. Most patients mix the daily dose into 4 oz of hot water twice a day and get used to it within a week. Raw decoction (boiled at home from sliced herbs) is stronger but takes 45 minutes of stovetop time per batch; we save it for cases where the extra potency clearly matters. Capsules are available if you really can't manage the taste.
Are Chinese herbs safe with my prescription medications? +
Most are, but not all. Before we write a formula we look at your full medication list — every prescription, OTC, and supplement — and screen for known interactions. Blood thinners (warfarin, eliquis, plavix), immunosuppressants, lithium, MAOIs, and a few cardiac meds are the usual flags. When in doubt we hold the herbs and rely on acupuncture, which has no drug interactions.
Are these herbs FDA approved? +
Chinese herbs are regulated by the FDA as dietary supplements under DSHEA — not as drugs. That means they cannot legally claim to treat or cure specific diseases, and manufacturers are responsible for safety and labeling. We use US suppliers operating under GMP standards (Mayway, KPC, Treasure of the East) who test every batch for heavy metals, pesticides, sulfites and microbial contamination. We do not dispense gray-market or unsourced herbs.
How long until I see something? +
Acute issues (a fresh cold, mild digestive upset, an early menstrual cramp): days, sometimes within hours. Chronic patterns (cycle, sleep, allergies, skin): expect 4-8 weeks before the new baseline becomes clear, and 8-12 weeks for stubborn skin conditions. Herbal formulas take 2-4 weeks to show full effect. We review at every visit and stop the formula when it's done its job — patients do not stay on herbs indefinitely.
Can I take Chinese herbs while pregnant or breastfeeding? +
Some yes, many no. Pregnancy has a specific list of contraindicated herbs (anything that moves blood strongly, certain laxatives, herbs traditionally classed as 'descending'). For pregnant or breastfeeding patients we use a much narrower toolkit and double-check every ingredient. Tell us at the first visit if you're pregnant, trying, or breastfeeding.
Why not just take a single-herb supplement like turmeric or ginseng? +
Single-herb supplements can help in specific cases, but classical Chinese formulas combine 8-15 ingredients precisely because herbs balance each other — one ingredient may amplify the chief action, another tempers harshness, a third guides the action to a specific organ. A formula is not a louder version of a supplement; it's a different category of intervention.
Do I need to come in for an in-person visit, or can you prescribe remotely? +
First herbal consult must be in-person — tongue and pulse exam genuinely matter for formula writing. After that, refills and minor adjustments can sometimes be handled by phone or video for established patients. We don't write formulas for people we haven't seen face-to-face.
